Abstract

Description

In a previous study [J Cell Physiol 1963(Dec); 62(3): 327-336] it was found that most macroscopic colonies formed from transplanted mouse marrow cells in the spleens of irradiated mice contained new colony-forming units (CFU). However, the distribution of such CFU among colonies was very heterogeneous, with many colonies containing few colony-forming cells, and a few containing very many. This result suggests that control of the self-renewal of CFU is lax. In the present paper, an analysis of this variation is presented which indicates that it might be generated by a well-known probabilistic ("stochastic") process, the "birth-and-death" process.
