The Amaranth, a journal of only eleven issues, was the brain child of Professor George Thaniel who served as the Chair of Modern Greek Studies at the University of Toronto from 1971-1991.
Originally meant as a guide to the Greek studies program, The Amaranth took a life of its own featuring, among other interesting topics and issues, new voices in poetry both in their original language and in translation.
George Thaniel was himself a multifaceted scholar and above all a poet. A brief biography and sample of his poetry can be seen at the University of Toronto Library, Canadian Poets site: http://www.library.utoronto.ca/canpoetry/thaniel/
An essay with background information and content analysis of The Amaranth, as well as all of its eleven issues, follows.
