The Department of Physical Therapy was founded in 1929 as the first physical therapy program in Canada in the Department of Extension at the University of Toronto. This diploma was a two-year program with an additional six months of clinical practice. By 1950 the diploma had evolved to a three-year program with eight months of clinical experience. It was transferred to the Faculty of Medicine, and combined with Occupational Therapy. Graduates received a diploma in physical and occupational therapy. Today, the MScPT is a professional program that requires the completion of a four-year undergraduate degree for admission.
