Item Teaching Mathematics for Social Justice in Multicultural, Multilingual Elementary Classrooms(Canadian Journal of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, 2010-07) Esmonde, Indigo ; Caswell, BeverlyThis article describes a set of collaborative inquiry projects that emerged from a research study group involving teachers, university researchers (the authors), and school district staff as they worked to teach mathematics equitably in an urban elementary school. The project is analyzed using Marilyn Cochran-Smith’s six principles of pedagogy for teaching for social justice. In the study group, teachers were involved in designing research projects to honour their students’ cultural and community knowledge and to develop mathematics teaching with a social justice focus. We offer three examples of teaching mathematics for social justice in diverse classrooms, and consider the broader implications of inquiry projects such as these.Item Subverting Corporate-Friendly Science Education in Public Schools(Our Schools/Our Selves, 2003) Bencze, LarryWould-be reformers in science education must focus on what appears to be a root cause of scientific illiteracy, namely a sort of "corporatist manifesto"--an unwritten ideology that transnational corporations use to control production and consumption to maximize profit. Suggests that this credo is manifested in take-for-granted practices such as standardization, globalization, efficiency, accountability, and technocratic rationalization. Suggests a new democratic science education for the people.Item Annotated Bibliography of Grade 1-8 Science Resources which Reflect the Diversity of the Ontario Classroom(2010-05-08T12:03:10Z) Mukhi, Jason Singh ; Percy, John ; Longe, BelindaThe purpose of this document is to develop an annotated bibliography of resources that represented the diversity of the Ontario science classroom. Many teachers consult different resources when developing their lesson plans and teaching their classes. However, not many of these resources cater to all students, especially to visible minorities. We were especially concerned about students from groups that have traditionally been underserved or underrepresented in science and technology. As a result, we have compiled a list of resources, such as websites, books, journal articles, etc, that would accomplish this goal. We hope elementary teachers will refer to our bibliography when they develop and/or teach their classes. High school teachers will also find this bibliography useful in developing their lesson plan, especially the section on science and ethics, since many of the resources are generally applicable.
