Spectroscopic studies of gases at low densities allow the determination of the intramolecular properties of free molecules. To investigate intermolecular properties, the molecules must be allowed to Interact with one another. One way of causing this interaction is to compress the gases to high pressures. The progressive changes which occur in the spectrum as the density is increased can be ascribed to the action of intermolecular forces during collisions.en_US
