Abstract
Description
Arguing that teaching contemporary repertoire is crucial to students’ musical and cultural development, Shand presents brief analyses of a number of pieces appropriate for student instrumental groups. The pieces she discusses cover a range of instrumentations, styles, systems of notation, and compositional techniques. Shand suggests teaching approaches
and classroom activities that will help students to demystify the contemporary repertoire which is such an important part of Canadian music.
