State Libraries and AI Technologies Briefing Book and Final Report

Abstract

The State Libraries and AI Technology (SLAAIT) project was a collaboration of 18 state libraries in the United States. Over a 6-month period, participants engaged in an ongoing conversation about AI-related opportunities and challenges for libraries. Participants learned about various jurisdictions’ approaches to AI – policies, legislation, regulations, etc. – and shared perspectives, tactics, and ideas about implementing AI in their libraries. Conversations discussions about use policies, training, vendor use of AI, and using AI to support library operations such as grant-writing. This final report outlines the methods and findings and documents the complexity of examining AI as an emerging topic. The end point of the project now faces a new policy and federal environment where the future of libraries, and federal support for libraries, is uncertain against a backdrop of policy changes.
