Abstract
The generator rotor weight, MVA output and speed, at over 120 hydro installations throughout the world have been examined along with the powerhouse crane capacity. Empirical formulae have been developed to calculate rotor weight based on known MVA output and speed. In addition, special cases such as large slow speed generators, effect of added inertia, and partial assembly of generators have been investigated to determine their effect on powerhouse crane capacity.
